Hurry Scurry & Mangaweka Stakes

Reported in the New Zealand mail on the 3rd March 1898

At the Ohingaiti race meeting last week the Nelson bred Alpha, by Louis d'Or - Barossa, won the Cup for Mr Hathaway, beating Marina (9st, Aqua Fortis (8st 10lb), Otiti, Alpine and Claude Duval. The winner, who carried 7st 13lb, won from start to finish. Aqua Fortis, who belongs to Mr T Hogg, subsequently beat Marina (9st 7lb) in the Flying with 9st 5lb up. Mr M Dimon's Aurora was responsible for a double, annexing the Hurry Scurry hard held and the Mangaweka Stages. Pukaki being runner-up in both events. The Hurdles fell to Mr Isherwood's Robin Hood, who won by 100 yards. Omuia, a bay gelding belonging to Mr A Gower, scored in the Hammond Stakes, and later on in the Welter, winning the latter by about 6 lengths from Hurimaitua.

The above article clearly idetifies that the horse Aurora was owned by Mr M Dimons. Aurora won the Hurry Scurry and Mangaweka Stakes and was beaten by Mr A Gower's horse Omuia in the Hammond Stakes as scribed on the photograph.

I found this photo in a box in E G Child's cottage, a little hut at McGriffert Street in Palmerston North in 1963. It is now listed with the National Library of New Zealand, Alexander Turnbull Library, Child Collection photograph 57722 (half plate).

In the very right-hand bottom of the photo, if you look hard, you can see E G & Co which one of identifying signatures.
